There are several kinds of vehicles and means of transport in Budapest that are available for everyone. Keep on reading to find out which are the most fun ways of transport in Budapest 🙂
1) Unique means of transport in Budapest – Castle Hill Funicular
I don’t know about you but I absolutely love funiculars. There is just something so interesting and magical in them. But that may only be because we don’t have a lot of funiculars in Hungary. 🙂
The castle hill funicular (Budavári Sikló) is the only funicular in Hungary. It started operating in 1870. It links the Buda side of the Chain Bridge to the Buda Castle.
2) Unique means of transport in Budapest – Children’s Railway
The Children’s Railway (Gyermekvasút) is a narrow gauge railway line that runs between Széchényi-hegy and Hűvösvölgy. It’s called children’s railway because most posts (except the train driver) are operated by children (with adult supervision). Originally, in the communist era, it was called ‘Pioneer Railway’ and was operated by communist scouts.
3) Unique means of transport in Budapest – Zugliget Chairlift
Zugliget Chairlift (Zugligeti Libegő) connects Zugliget with János hill, a popular hiking destination in Hungary. It was built in 1970. It is almost 1 km long and the whole ride takes about 15 minutes. It’s probably the most romantic way for couples to reach János hegy and it provides a beautiful view of the city as well.
4) Unique means of transport in Budapest – Boat
Taking a boat ride in Budapest at night is one of the most beautiful experience you can have. The city is beautifully lit, you can see all the amazing buildings and historical sights by the river illuminated, while you feel the cool breeze on your face. There are several boat lines in Budapest that you can choose from. There is even a hop on hop off boat line and if you would like to try something exciting, you can take a boat taxi as well.
5) Unique means of transport in Budapest – Metro line 1
If you want to travel on the oldest metro line in continental Europe and the third oldest underground railway line in the world, take metro line 1. This line will take you to some of the most popular sights in Budapest, such as the Széchenyi Bath, Heroes square or the Hungarian State Opera House. The stations are old, but beautiful. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
