1) Interesting buildings in Budapest – The House of Parliament
The Hungarian Parliament is one of the most grandiose and spectacular buildings on this Earth. It’s the 3rd largest parliament building in the world. It has 691 rooms, 20 kilometers of stairs and 40 kilograms of gold was used on its interior decoration. It’s situated on the bank of the river on the Pest side of the city. You can get the best view of the whole building from accross the river.
2) Interesting buildings in Budapest – Fisherman’s Bastion
The Fisherman’s Bastion (Halászbástya) is a terrace in Buda Castle that was built in neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque style. It looks like a building from a fairytale. It has seven towers and lots of stairs and walking paths. From there you get a beautiful panoramic view of the Pest side of the city and the Danube.
3) Interesting buildings in Budapest – Vajdahunyad Castle
Vajdahunyad Castle (Vajdahunyad Vára) is situated in the City Park (Városliget). It was originally built from cardboard and wood to celebrate the 1000 years of Hungary, but because it became very popular, they rebuilt it from bricks and stone. It contains copies of parts of important buildings from the Kingdom of Hungary, especially the Hunyadi Castle in Transylvania. These parts were built in different architectural styles, such as Baroque, Renaissance, Gothic and Romanesque.
4) Interesting buildings in Budapest – Dohány Street Synagogue
Dohány Street Synagogue is the largest synagogue in Europe and the second largest one in the world. It is so large, that it can seat up to 3000 people. It was built in Moorish style with Byzantine, Gothic and Romantic elements. It contains the Great Synagogue, the Heores’ Temple, a graveyard, the Memorial and the Jewish Museum.
5) Interesting buildings in Budapest – St. Stephen’s Basilica
St. Stephen’s Basilica (Szent István Bazilika) is a Catholic Basilica in the center of Budapest. It is the 3rd largest church building in Hungary. It was built in neoclassical style. It was named after King Stephen, the first king of Hungary, whoes right hand you can still see in the basilica, in the reliquary.
6) Interesting buildings in Budapest – Museum of Applied Arts
There are several interesting museum buildings in Budapest. The Museum of Applied Arts (Iparművészeti Múzeum) is one of them. It was built in Art Nouveau style and its interior design contains Hindu, Mogul, and Islamic elements as well. The roof is covered with beautiful ceramic tiles made by the famous Zsolnay porcelain manufacture.
6) Interesting buildings in Budapest – National Theatre
The new building of the National Theatre (Nemzeti Színház) was built not so long ago, in 2002. It is situated on the bank of the Danube. It was designed by architect Mária Siklós. Its stage is a moving stage that can be raised at 72 different points. There is a modern park surrounding the building with artificial lakes, a labyrinth and statues of famous Hungarian actors.

Bálna (literally ‘Whale’) is a cultural, trade and gastronomical center on the bank of the Danube on the Pest side of Budapest. Its whale-like shape and glass exterior is what makes it interesting. Thanks to the glass walls, you get a wonderful view of the Danube river from inside the building as well. Nowadays you can find shops, small exhibitions and restaurants in this building.
